Candidate is a job seeker who has been pre-qualified for a specific position or category of jobs and has been through the application process. Although sometimes interchangeable with the term applicant there is a distinguishing difference.
Applicant is a job seeker who has applied for a job opening, either by sending a resume or by completing an application. Candidate is the applicant that has been screened and is minimally qualified for the job opening. Candidates are individuals an employer will contact after the application period and conduct some kind of an interview.
